Master of Public Health


Health Promotion Emphasis


The curriculum leading to the Master of Public Health degree with emphasis in Health Promotion is designed to assist the student to:

  • Gain clear perspectives on the multidimensional nature of health and adequate exposure to standard public health principles and practice.
  • Acquire specialized knowledge and skills in the area of health promotion.
  • Mature professionally through involvement in at least 400 hours of applied field learning, creative community projects and appropriate internships, or a combination of practical experience and research.
  • Gain skills to understand and undertake Public Health research.

Prerequisites


The prerequisites for the MPH with emphasis in Health Promotion include the following:

  1. A baccalaureate degree or its equivalent, preferably in the natural or social sciences, with a GPA of not less than 3.00.


  2. Undergraduate studies in:
    1. Human Nutrition (at least 3 semester hours) and
    2. One of the following:
      • 6 semester hours of general health-related courses
      • Chemistry (3 semester hours)
      • Human Anatomy and Physiology (3 semester hours)

  3. Demonstrated word processing proficiency


  4. Proficiency in oral and written use of the English language, which is the medium of instruction at AIIAS.

It is possible to be accepted into the program provisionally when prerequisites are not met. In such a case, the student agrees to complete all missing prerequisites as co-requisite requirements before 50% of course work has been completed. Students with an undergraduate GPA of less than 3.00 may be admitted on a probationary basis. Their status will be reevaluated after completion of 12 semester hours of course work.

Requirements


To earn the MPH degree with emphasis in Health Promotion, the student must satisfy the following requirements:

  1. Complete a minimum of 39 semester hours of studies as stipulated in the curriculum, achieving a GPA of 3.00 or higher.


  2. Complete one of the following:
    1. Applied Community Project (200 clock hours), plus Field Learning Internship (100 hours). A professionally prepared written report of both activities must be submitted.
    2. Master Thesis including an oral defense.

3.      Pass a 2-part comprehensive examination covering all required courses.

All MPH students are required to obtain at least 100 hours of Integrated Field Learning Experience in conjunction with the courses listed below. Of the 300 hours, 200 hours are earned through the Applied Community Project, and 100 in the Field Learning Internships. Courses offering direct field experience include the following:

The major part of the field learning experience is obtained by implementing a carefully planned community project and by arranging for public health internships.

Alternatives:
Options other than that listed above, like thesis and other MPH emphasis, may be arranged individually with the department chairperson.
