CHIS History of the Seventh-day Adventist Church

A study of the history of the Adventist Church from its nineteenth-century Millerite roots, its organization and reorganization, the development of its missionary understanding and activities, to its present worldwide expansion.

TIME INVESTMENT

COURSE OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, the students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the historical context in which Adventism was born.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of the important role of the Millerite Movement and Disappointment.
  3. Understand key events and issues in the historical development of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
  4. Understand doctrinal development and clarification in Seventh-day Adventist history.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of the life, ministry, and prophetic role of Ellen G. White.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of doctrinal heresy and personnel problems the denomination has experienced.
  7. Demonstrate understanding of the central role of the Bible in the development of Adventist beliefs.
  8. Apply lessons from Adventist history to his or her personal life.

COURSE FACILITATOR

DONNY CHRISSUTIANTO, PhD

Dr. Donny Chrissutianto is an assistant professor of the Theological Seminary at the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies. He is a pastor from Indonesia who loves history and theology.

He earned his PhD in Church History and Historical Theology, cognate in Systematic Theology at the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies. He has written several articles and presented papers on various international conferences. Recently, he just published a book related to the development of early Adventist theology and in the process of finishing his second book on the Sabbath and Sunday in the history of Christianity.

He won third place in the Fourth Ministerial Student Writing Contest held by Ministry magazine in 2014, and second place as Best Performance in Pastoral Administration at East Java Conference in 2000.

He has a wife, Maria, and two children, Nicolas and Keziah.


 

COURSE DEVELOPER

MICHAEL CAMPBELL, PhD

Dr. Michale Campbell serves as a full-time faculty at Southern Adventist University in Collegedale, Tennessee, USA. Before going back to the US, he served as an associate professor of Theological/Historical Studies at the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies for several years.

He has written a number of research articles, published journals and presented in many international conferences. He was also an editor and reviewer for many book manuscripts, magazines and other publications. Recently, he has served as an assistant editor for Ellen G. White Encyclopedia.
